This color change was not intentional by Rolex officials but is a naturally occurring "patina" formed by a paint defect during manufacturing combined with prolonged exposure to environmental factors such as sunlight, air, and humidity. Because each watch experiences a different environment, the degree and shade of discoloration are unique, giving this watch a special personality and story. This color change from blue to deep violet exhibits a charming interplay of light and shadow under different lighting conditions and is referred to by some as "Purple Rain". The slight aging spots around the hour markers on the dial (as shown in the figure) also add to the unique charm of this vintage watch.
